When Medina and Summit County Boards of Developmental Disabilities partnered with We Thrive Together to host the Interactive Tech Expo at Summit Mall in Fairlawn, Ohio, OneBridge Center was proud to participate as a featured vendor. On September 25, 2025, our participants didn’t just attend the event—they became active contributors, operating a digital photo booth and demonstrating the very digital skills they’ve been developing through our DigiSkills program. This event perfectly illustrated our mission: empowering adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through technology-focused work-readiness training.

Preparing for Real-World Customer Service

In the days leading up to the Tech Expo, select OneBridge participants received specialized training to operate the digital photo booth. This wasn’t passive observation—it was active job readiness preparation that mirrored real workplace expectations.

Our participants learned how to:

  • Access and run the photo booth application independently
  • Greet potential customers with welcoming, professional language
  • Explain the service clearly and confidently
  • Operate technology while managing customer interactions
  • Troubleshoot basic issues without staff intervention
  • Maintain the booth throughout a full day event

This preparation exemplifies the hands-on, practical approach of our vocational rehabilitation program. Rather than simply learning computer skills in a classroom setting, participants apply their knowledge in authentic scenarios where customer service, communication, and technical competence must work together seamlessly.

Similar to how Justin developed confidence through daily practice, our Tech Expo participants built their skills incrementally—first learning the application, then practicing their customer service scripts, and finally executing independently during the live event.

Operating the Digital Photo Booth

On September 25th, our trained participants took their positions at the OneBridge Center booth in Summit Mall’s bustling corridors. Throughout the day, they welcomed hundreds of expo attendees, offering complimentary digital photos sent via text or email.

The photo booth operation required participants to demonstrate multiple competencies simultaneously:

Technical Skills:

  • Navigating the photo booth software application
  • Capturing quality photos
  • Sending images via text message or email
  • Troubleshooting when technology didn’t cooperate
  • Managing digital files and customer information

Soft Skills:

  • Greeting strangers with confidence and warmth
  • Explaining the service clearly
  • Managing customer expectations
  • Handling busy periods with patience
  • Maintaining professionalism throughout a long day

Customer Service:

  • Making eye contact and smiling
  • Using appropriate greeting phrases
  • Offering promotional items (stress balls and keychains)
  • Thanking customers for their participation
  • Representing OneBridge Center professionally

These are precisely the skills employers value and that lead to successful employment outcomes. Our participants weren’t just running a photo booth—they were demonstrating workplace readiness in real time.

OneBridge Center Promotional Materials

In addition to digital photos, participants distributed OneBridge Center stress balls and keychains featuring our branding and tagline: “Technology focused work-readiness training for people with disabilities.”

This promotional aspect of booth operation provided additional learning opportunities. Participants practiced:

  • Offering branded items appropriately
  • Explaining OneBridge Center’s mission when asked
  • Representing the organization positively
  • Understanding the purpose of promotional materials in business settings

The visible OneBridge Center banner—displaying our logo and mission statement—created awareness throughout the expo. Families, professionals, and community members learned about our person-centered approach to digital skills training and vocational rehabilitation right here in Medina.

Exploring Assistive Technology Throughout the Expo

While some participants operated the photo booth, others attended the Tech Expo as learners, exploring the impressive range of vendors showcasing assistive technology and remote support solutions. The expo’s mission—demonstrating how technology can increase independence, improve quality of life, and provide access to community—aligned perfectly with OneBridge Center’s values.

Participants walked through the expo discovering:

  • Assistive communication devices that help non-verbal individuals express themselves
  • Adaptive computer interfaces designed for various physical abilities
  • Smart home technology that supports independent living
  • Remote support systems that connect individuals with assistance when needed
  • Educational technology tailored for diverse learning styles
  • Employment-focused tools that accommodate different workplace needs

This exposure to cutting-edge assistive technology served multiple purposes. Participants learned about resources that could enhance their own independence. They saw firsthand how technology continues evolving to support people with disabilities. And they witnessed the broader disability services community coming together in partnership—exactly the kind of community engagement we prioritize.

Similar to our community outings to places like the Akron Art Museum and pottery studios, the Tech Expo provided real-world learning experiences that extend far beyond classroom walls.

The Power of Public Demonstration

Operating a vendor booth at a public event represents a significant milestone for our participants. Public-facing work requires confidence, competence, and the ability to handle unpredictable situations—skills that develop over time through supportive practice.

Consider the journey participants like Julie have traveled. Julie arrived at OneBridge quiet and reserved, barely speaking in group settings. Today, she teaches monthly classes to peers. The participants operating our Tech Expo booth have made similar transformations, progressing from hesitant learners to confident representatives of our organization.

The public nature of the expo also provided valuable desensitization to the kind of environments participants might encounter in competitive employment. Busy retail settings, constant customer interactions, ambient noise, visual distractions—these are the realities of many workplaces. The Tech Expo offered a supported opportunity to navigate these challenges while demonstrating real capability.

Community Partnership and Visibility

OneBridge Center’s participation in the Interactive Tech Expo strengthened our connections with critical community partners:

Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities and Summit County Board of Developmental Disabilities – Both boards serve individuals we support through our programs and refer families seeking adult day services and vocational rehabilitation.

We Thrive Together – This partnership organization focuses on increasing independence and quality of life for individuals with disabilities, aligning perfectly with our mission.

Fellow Service Providers – The expo brought together diverse organizations serving the disability community, creating networking opportunities and potential collaboration.

Families and Individuals – Direct interaction with hundreds of community members raised awareness about OneBridge Center’s unique approach to technology-focused employment preparation.

This visibility matters. Many families don’t know that programs like our DigiSkills curriculum exist. Seeing our participants confidently operating technology and engaging with customers challenges assumptions about what adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can achieve.

From Expo to Employment: Building Transferable Skills

Every aspect of the Tech Expo experience builds competencies that transfer directly to employment settings:

The digital photo booth operation parallels retail technology positions, customer service kiosks, and reception duties that increasingly rely on digital systems.

Customer interaction skills apply to countless service industry positions—food service, retail, hospitality, and administrative support.

Promotional item distribution mirrors merchandising, marketing support, and event coordination roles.

Technology troubleshooting develops problem-solving abilities valued in any workplace.

Full-day stamina demonstrates the endurance required for standard work shifts.

Professional representation shows capability for positions where employees serve as organizational ambassadors.

These aren’t hypothetical connections. Our employment services team works daily to place participants in competitive employment that leverages exactly these skills. When we can point to real-world demonstrations like the Tech Expo booth operation, employers see concrete evidence of capability rather than abstract potential.

Technology as Equalizer and Enabler

The Interactive Tech Expo’s focus on assistive technology resonates deeply with OneBridge Center’s philosophy. We’ve long believed that technology, when thoughtfully implemented, serves as a great equalizer for individuals with disabilities.

Our DigiSkills program teaches Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, typing, data entry, and digital communication specifically because these tools enable workplace participation. When someone masters email, calendar management, and document creation, they can contribute to virtually any office environment.

But assistive technology expands possibilities even further. The devices and systems showcased at the Expo demonstrated how innovation continues removing barriers:

  • Speech-to-text software enables communication for those with physical limitations
  • Screen readers provide access for visual impairments
  • Adaptive keyboards accommodate various motor abilities
  • Remote support systems ensure help is always available
  • Smart home technology supports independent living

For our participants, seeing this technology validated their own digital skills development journey. The tools they’re learning at OneBridge aren’t isolated skills—they’re part of a broader technological ecosystem designed to support inclusion, independence, and full community participation.

Looking Forward: Future Opportunities

OneBridge Center’s successful participation in the Interactive Tech Expo opens doors for future opportunities. We hope to:

Expand vendor participation at similar events throughout Northeast Ohio, providing more participants with public-facing experience.

Develop additional customer service training based on lessons learned from the photo booth operation.

Create partnerships with technology vendors discovered at the Expo.

Integrate assistive technology showcased at the Expo into our programs where appropriate.

Share our model with other disability service providers seeking to provide real-world skill application opportunities.

Most importantly, we’ll continue creating experiences where our participants can demonstrate their capabilities publicly, challenging perceptions and building pathways to meaningful employment and greater independence.
