Not every community outing goes exactly according to plan — and sometimes, that’s what makes them the most memorable. On a recent trip to the Fannie May Chocolate Tour in North Canton, Ohio, our OneBridge Center participants enjoyed a sweet, laugh-filled day that included a sliding chair, a chocolate shopping spree, a tour of how one of Ohio’s most beloved chocolatiers makes its candy, a lunch break at the park, and one very unfortunate frappe. It was, in short, a perfect day.

The Big Pink Chair — and Shannon’s Grand Entrance

Before anyone even made it through the front door, the day had already delivered its first unforgettable moment. Outside the Fannie May factory sits an oversized pink Adirondack chair — a beloved photo opportunity that staff member Ana was not about to let the group miss.

Ana invited everyone to climb up for a group photo. Brayden was first up, making his way to the back of the giant chair and standing tall. Then came Shannon — who made it up just fine, sat down, and immediately began sliding backwards. Completely unintentional. Completely hilarious. The whole group erupted in laughter, and just like that, the tone for the rest of the day was set: fun, relaxed, and full of genuine moments.

That ability to laugh together — staff and participants sharing a spontaneous, unscripted moment of joy — is one of the things that makes our Community Day-Out Activities so meaningful. These outings aren’t scripted field trips. They’re real experiences, and real experiences come with real memories.

Inside the Factory: Chocolate Everywhere You Look

Once inside, the group had a few minutes to look around before the tour began — and Shannon wasted absolutely no time. With shelves of Fannie May chocolates in every direction, she made her selections and completed what might have been the most decisive shopping trip in OneBridge outing history, all before the tour even started.

To be fair, it’s hard to blame her. Fannie May has been crafting premium chocolates since 1920, and the factory store offers an impressive selection of their most iconic pieces. For the participants, browsing the display cases, reading the labels, handling money, and making purchasing decisions are all real-world skills that connect directly to the independence-building work we do every day through our Life N Tech adult day services program.

The Chocolate Tour: 45 Minutes of Sweet History

The Fannie May Chocolate Tour runs about 45 minutes and takes visitors through the story of how the company was founded, how the chocolates are made, and how the brand got its name. For our participants, it was an engaging mix of history, science, and sensory experience — watching chocolate take shape and learning about the process behind something most of us enjoy without ever thinking about where it comes from.

Tours like this one offer a gentle, low-pressure way to practice listening, following along in a group setting, asking questions, and engaging with guides and presenters — all skills that translate directly into workplace and community readiness. It’s the kind of educational outing that fits naturally into the broader goals of our vocational rehabilitation and life skills programming.

Lunch at the Park

After the tour, the group headed to a nearby park to enjoy lunch together outdoors. There’s something grounding about eating outside after a morning of activity — good food, fresh air, and time to decompress and talk about everything they’d just seen and done.

Shared meals during community outings are a natural opportunity to practice social conversation, take turns, and simply enjoy each other’s company. These quieter moments between the bigger attractions are often where some of the best conversations happen — and where the relationships between participants and staff deepen in ways that matter.

Books-A-Million and the Frappe Incident

The final stop of the day was Books-A-Million, where Shannon — staying perfectly true to form — ordered a coffee frappe. She carried it to a table, went to set it down, and in one swift and spectacular moment, the cup hit the floor and sent its contents directly onto Ana.

Ana spent the remainder of the outing with sticky socks, sticky shoes, sticky pants, and sticky legs. And the group, once again, could not stop laughing.

It would be hard to script a better ending to a day that had already featured a chair-sliding incident and a pre-tour chocolate shopping spree. Ana, for her part, took it entirely in stride — which says everything about the kind of staff OneBridge participants are lucky to have by their side. The willingness to laugh together, to be human together, and to make the best of unexpected moments is at the heart of what makes our team exceptional.

What a Day Like This Really Means

From the outside, a trip to Fannie May and Books-A-Million might look like a simple fun outing. And it absolutely was fun. But for our participants, days like this one are also about so much more.

They’re about exploring new places with a supportive team. Making their own choices — including which chocolates to buy before the tour even begins. Navigating social situations, public spaces, and unexpected moments with confidence and good humor. And building the kinds of shared memories and genuine relationships that make life richer.

Every outing we plan through our Community Day-Out Activities program is designed with these goals in mind — and every now and then, the day delivers something even better than what we planned for. This was one of those days.
