The New Face of the Remote Workplace

The remote workplace has taken on a new face in 2021 after the events of the past year. While most states are starting to lift COVID restrictions many workplaces are still not back to normal. In a recent survey conducted by PWC.

While the beginning of working from home for many people was tough remote work has become easier. At first we were all trying to figure everything out however, now the routine has gotten easier as seen in the most recent results by PWC where 83% of employers now say the shift to remote work has been successful for their company, compared to 73% in a June 2020 study.

Whether we like it or not the traditional office is here to stay, but however, its role could potential go through an evolution.  According to PWC “Less than one in five executives say they want to return to the office as it was pre-pandemic. The rest are grappling with how widely to extend remote work options, with just 13% of executives prepared to let go of the office for good. Meanwhile, 87% of employees say the office is important for collaborating with team members and building relationships — their top-rated needs for the office.”

The evolution might continue to be remote work or a hybrid method where workers are in the office a few days a week and home other days a week. We all need to continue to develop the important remote work strategies to continue to meet the needs to the changing workplace needs.

Set a Workspace

There are a few strategies for remote employees to help them successfully achieve success while not in the office. One of the most important is to set up a designated workspace. Not everyone may have a room that could be transformed into a home office but if you have a designated workspace this will help you. It’s highly advisable to make sure the space has all the essential gadgets and tools you need to complete your job.

Develop a Routine or Schedule

It is important to develop a schedule or routine.  One of the biggest challenges for remote workers is getting things done amidst distractions. In fact, the majority of people that are operating from home experience this dilemma. They become easily distracted by email, mobile phone calls, children playing, and many other things. As a matter of fact, getting things done while distracted is much harder than getting things done when you are not distracted. Not only will a schedule or routine help you focus but it will keep your day on track. It might sound nice to work all day in your pajamas but get up and get dressed. Get ready like you would at your workplace. Sticking to a schedule helps minimize distractions.

Set a Clear End to Your Work Day

Set a clear end time. In a traditional office we all leave work at the end of the day. However, when you work remotely you can just keep working. You can set certain tasks that signal the beginning and end of the day. For example, you could end your day by creating a task list for the next day.

Take Breaks Through the Day

Make sure and take breaks. When you are in the office you co-workers often stop by to speak to you and you take breaks. However, at home because being more isolated you can more time at a task or desk without a break.
