Jonathan’s Journey to Employment
![]()
Jonathan participated in a Community Based Assessment at Habitat for Humanity near his home between August and September 2023. The location was chosen for its accessibility by public transportation, a crucial factor for Jonathan who relies on it for commuting. Over the course of five days, he worked in various capacities such as managing the dock, assisting with customer purchases, maintaining the sales floor, and assembling and testing light fixtures. He also developed skills in signing in and out, time management, and both teamwork and independent task handling, performing commendably throughout the assessment period.
After the community based assessment a referral was made for Jonathan for job development. Following a positive review in late September with his VR Counselor, and the Community Employment Specialist, Jonathan expressed a desire to work in a warehouse setting, preferably at the nearby Amazon Warehouse where he could work overnight shifts. Job Development efforts were successful, and by mid-October, he applied for a position at Amazon, which started early in the morning. With transportation arranged by his VR Counselor, he completed the necessary onboarding processes, including securing required work gear through Amazon and setting up his bank account for direct deposit. Jonathan began his new job at Amazon on November 4, 2023, with ongoing support from our community employment specialist, including direct communication established with his supervisor. He is still working at Amazon successfully.
Walter’s Path to Employment
Walter was referred to Onebridge for Job Development services. With support from his employment specialist, he created a resume, registered on Ohio Means Jobs, and began Job Seeking Skills Training. Onebridge’s community support specialist met with Walter once or twice per week to apply for part-time janitor positions near his home or accessible via public transportation.
Despite applying for around eight jobs and the specialist contacting companies directly, Walter initially struggled to obtain interviews due to his 30+ year gap in employment since 1990. Finally, after the specialist inquired, one company agreed to interview Walter. With technological assistance from a support person, Walter completed the interview and onboarding process successfully.
Walter began training for his new job as a janitor working at an office building on the near west side of downtown Cleveland. The location was a short bus ride from his home. After completing the training period, he was able to work independently with responsibilities for cleaning four floors and reporting to his supervisor.
Walter absolutely loves his new janitorial position, as it aligns with the type of work he desired. Onebridge’s employment specialist stays in touch with Walter weekly as he saves money with plans to move into his own apartment while continuing in this role. Through perseverance and customized employment services, Walter overcame significant barriers to re-enter the workforce after decades and now looks forward to increased independence.
Alex Path to Becoming a Farm Hand
Alex was referred to Onebridge for Job Development in December 2023, as he was graduating from Cuyahoga Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Marketing. His VR Counselor worked with the college and arranged a virtual meeting with the owner of Farming with Friends, Alex, Alex’s Mom, and Onebridge’s community employment specialist prior to job seeking. Though no positions were immediately available, the Farm Hand role was expected to open soon. Alex and the specialist prepared through practicing interviews, reviewing the farm website, and discussing potential questions. The specialist maintained weekly contact with the farm owner to highlight Alex’s skills and interest in the role.
Alex applied for some open positions in Medina, interviewing for a couple while the specialist stayed engaged with Farming with Friends. When the Farm Hand position was posted, Alex’s interview was scheduled for March 4th, 2024 with the owner and board members. Alex impressively interviewed alone and was offered the job, starting as a Farm Hand on March 28th, 2024. He has since thrived in various tasks with animals, events, marketing, and building connections with the farm team. Onebridge’s community employment specialist continues weekly check-ins as Alex shares his exciting experiences, truly loving this well-matched opportunity aligned with his interests and skills.
